american honey. http://www.smittenphotographyblog.com/?postID=244&american-honey http://www.smittenphotographyblog.com/?postID=244&american-honey Sat, 20 Feb 2010 13:14:00 GMT so, it is with sadness and joy that we begin packing up our lives this weekend and prepare for the next chapter of life. we'll raise our kids on the banks of the arkansas river, in the middle of the rocky mountains ... plant a garden in our backyard. the views are breathtaking and i'd be lying if i said i wasn't excited to continue my photography journey amidst the bluest of skies and purple mountain majesties. smitten photography is a huge part of who i am and i will be traveling back to the east coast many times this year to photograph some incredible weddings! my hope and prayer is that this blog ... my business will continue to grow in new and exciting ways as god goes before us in our move out west. i've always joked about how much i wish i could do photography out west ... on the west coast and now that it's actually going to happen it is pretty exciting :)
lady antebellum sings a song called american honey. the words have played so many times in my head over the past month as the potential for this move has come into our lives. i think this song was written for people like us ... those who long to live life built around beauty ... community...

She grew up on a side of the road
Where the church bells ring and strong love grows
She grew up good
She grew up slow
Like American honey

Steady as a preacher
Free as a weed
Couldn't wait to get goin'
But wasn't quite ready to leave
So innocent, pure and sweet
American honey

There's a wild, wild whisper
Blowin' in the wind
Callin' out my name like a long lost friend
Oh I miss those days as the years go by
Oh nothing's sweeter than summertime
And American honey

Get caught in the race
Of this crazy life
Tryin' to be everything can make you lose your mind
I just wanna go back in time
To American honey, yea

There's a wild, wild whisper
Blowin' in the wind
Callin' out my name like a long lost friend
Oh I miss those days as the years go by
Oh nothing's sweeter than summertime
And American honey

Gone for so long now
I gotta get back to her somehow
To American honey

Ooh There's a wild, wild whisper
Blowin' in the wind
Callin' out my name like a long lost friend
Oh I miss those days as the years go by
Oh nothin's sweeter than summertime
And American honey

i'll keep you posted over the next month as we continue saying goodbye ... just want to thank you for the joy you have brought to my life. YOU are why smitten is smitten. and i look forward to sharing this new journey with you! here are some views from the town we will be living in ... the many breaths of fresh air that await our family...

debra + gordon http://www.smittenphotographyblog.com/?postID=242&debra-gordon http://www.smittenphotographyblog.com/?postID=242&debra-gordon Fri, 19 Feb 2010 14:27:00 GMT
it was one of those days. one of those heavenly days. one of those heavenly days when rain and clouds couldn't ruin anything. in fact, the rain and clouds parted the way for a wonderful celebration between two people that love each other dearly. debra and gordon smiled through every drop of rain on their wedding day just thinking about the moment that they would become husband and wife. savannah is such a beautiful city to be married in ... i had so much fun exploring the town with them! when we realized that the rain wasn't going to quit on the morning of the wedding i ran and picked up some adorable blue and white rain boots for debra to wear during the photos and i just love the way the pictures turned out! i can't help but feel overjoyed at the fact that i get to photograph weddings like this one - and that rain really does make things new. for both of those things, i am grateful ... i wish debra and gordon a long and happy life together!

smitten photo academy {online} http://www.smittenphotographyblog.com/?postID=240&smitten-photo-academy-online http://www.smittenphotographyblog.com/?postID=240&smitten-photo-academy-online Thu, 18 Feb 2010 10:20:00 GMT

and here is what students are saying about the workshop...

"i'm SUPER thrilled that i have not used my flash since this class started!"

"sharon, i am so excited to be on week 4 already!!! but i do NOT want this course to end!!! :( thank you so much!!!"

"omg i would love a level 102 class!"

"i love looking at everybody's photos and chatting with everyone. we are all giving each other encouragement and motivation and praise. it's awesome!!!"

"sharon, i am loving this class and learning soooooo much!"

"sharon, you make this easy to understand, you teach in normal people terms, not high tech terms! we are very blessed to have such a great talented teacher! :) "

i have been blown away by how much each person has grown in their photography over the past 5 weeks! so, here is your chance to get in on the next workshop beginning march 17, 2010.

here are more details:

in april 2008 i taught the first smitten photo academy {and in case you are wondering... i call them {spa} days because cameras and pedicures are two of my favorite things}. it was never something i intended on doing but i had clients asking if i would be willing to teach some of the basics of how to get the most out of their digital slr cameras. my initial reaction was NO, but the more i thought about it the more i realized that there isn't much out there in the way of a fun and easy to understand photography class for busy people. what i have since learned is that there are tons of people all over the country who are looking for a way to learn like this and not everyone can hop on a plane to north carolina for a four hour workshop. i decided that the solution was to design an online class that takes the same information learned in a {spa} day and spread it out over a 5 week course in MUCH more detail. so, now, YOU have the chance to take part in the smitten photo academy no matter where you live!

need more details? sure you do.

-this workshop is open to anyone who wants to learn to take better pictures with their digital SLR camera. what if i don't own a SLR, but i can borrow one? can i take the class? YES. if you have access to a camera for 5 weeks and a burning place in your heart that gets giddy when you see good pictures, then this class is for you! high school or college students are also more than welcome to join in the fun!

-this workshop is not for professional photographers or intended to train you on how to become a professional photographer - the class is meant for those who enjoy photography as a hobby or serious passion and want to better their skills ... knowledge in the field.

-there will be a series of lessons and assignments over a 5 week period that will cover a wide range of topics. learning to fully control your camera and exposures is the main goal of the class. and just so you know...anyone who has ever been scared of taking the camera dial off "auto" is my favorite kind of student :) you will walk away with the ability to take the kinds of photos that you want to take ... not just be okay with what the camera says is best.

still want more? yep, i bet.

-when you email me to register for the class i will send you details on how to sign up and pay your tuition. i'll also ask you to take the code of honor that you won't distribute the lessons and assignments with your supper club, small group, play group, doctors office or neighbors. many hours have gone into the preparation of these assignments and i kindly appreciate them not being shared without my permission :)

-the biggest bonus to the smitten photo academy {online} is that we have an exclusive invite-only group page where you can post photos, questions or discuss lessons together with others in the class! this is by far the feature i am most excited about since i will be able to give additional helpful hints and guide you on your way to taking better photos!

-i will share in depth tips and tricks complete with photo examples to make the concepts easier to understand.

so, what now?! i want to sign up!

-awesome! i'd love for you to join me for the 5 week class starting WEDNESDAY, MARCH 17, 2010

-the tuition is $200 per person

-if you aren't on facebook, you need to be. it is the portal to our class! facebook doesn't cost anything and you can friend request me here: smitten sharon we have to be friends for you to gain access to the private group page. who knows, maybe you'll meet your future spouse in there? :)

-lessons and assignments will go out for 5 straight weeks each wednesday morning at 6 am, eastern time. you don't have to read them that early, but that's when they will be sent.

-i've already gotten emails from people asking if this class can be given as a gift. the answer is YES! when you email me to sign up just let me know that you are giving the gift that keeps on giving.

are you ready?

-email sharon@smittenphotography.com OR click the connect box at the top of this site to get signed up!

i hope you can be a part of this workshop!! if you have any questions, feel free to leave them in the comments box below in case someone else is wondering the same thing!

debra ... gordon were such an incredible couple to photograph! i love when brides ... grooms put so much thought into locations that best suit them ... choose places that have significant meaning to their relationship. i headed down to savannah, georgia a couple days early to meet these two for their engagement shoot. we started out on tybee island where debra and gordon played in the sunshine and ran in the sand together before heading back to downtown savannah amidst the lush trees and beautiful fountains. and their wedding day?! amazing. can't wait to share it with you - complete with rain boots and umbrellas :)
